Illustrations

Today i am starting to do my illustrations, i am thinking about taking existing garments i.e menswear from the internet and scanning in my own knits to put on the garments in photoshop.

Samples and finals

I have now finished my samples and my finals. Thank the lord! It took a while but i managed to get them done. My samples are mainly striped, symbolising the sea and sand to make it look like the horizon. I have done a mixture of dubied samples as well as domestics. I would describe my samples as quite textured and structured.

I will, will, will get my photos and work up on here in the next few days, i just really need to get round to it! :/

Knit..

I must start by saying that i cannot believe how many knit samples i have made over the past four weeks and still cannot decide on all of my final pieces! this is quite frustrating as i have already done a few of my finals. However i am unsure which techniques to use for my others. Im definitely going to go along with the idea of having One large knit sample and a pair of jeans that i will upcycle aswell as three smaller knit samples and three smaller samples of upcycled denim. I really like that idea as my final outcome. I have managed to do some knit samples on the Dubied machine the 2.5 and the 7 gauge such as the circular technique, ladders and changing colours. I have done quite a lot on the domestics to such as cables, ladders weaving in and transferring. I didnt find the ones of the Dubied too bad although on the domestics i found the cables quite tricky to master but after a few practices (as with all the techniques) i managed to get a final sample. As Annie say,s if you want to be a knitter, you have to knit! you have to master the machines and what yarns to use its just practice makes perfect i suppose!.

Liverpool - Crosby Marina and Albert Docks!

On friday the 13th, i took a trip to Liverpool, to go to a beach that had been recommended by one of peers from my course. It took around 45 minutes to get there. Once we had arrived in Liverpool i thought about going to Albert Docks as this was something that represents Liverpool and what it is known for. I took some pictures there of the docks and the ship that was there too.

I then travelled to Crosby Marina, which i found very interesting! it had pits of sand full of rubbish and litter! i was extremely pleased to see this as i didnt have as much luck when i went to Blackpool the week before. I managed to get some pictures for evidence and my sketchbook.

Beyond the Marina was the beach, i was amazed to find so many things that interested me and what were useful for my project!. I picked up some natural elements from the sea such as seaweed, shells and driftwood also some manmade rubbish such as rope, plastic and bottle tops.
I thought about using my findings to attatch onto my final samples. This would give it a story of my journey and shows how i collected things from the places that i visited! I really liked this idea and will definitely consider doing this, it would mean my samples were more prototype rather than being wearable however i believe thats what adds the excitement to it.

I must admit i was extremely pleased with what i found in Liverpool, and found that i had a very productive day and that brought many ideas home with me.

Blackpool Beach..

Today, me and my boyfriend went to Blackpool Beach. On tuesday i had my tutorial with amy. We discussed about how i can keep my theme local to make it more "sustainable". Amy gave me some suggestions on how i could do this, we both came up with the idea of me going to a few different beaches to give it a story behind it. Travelling, bringing a collection of RUBBISH together from different places and showing the story of my journey. This would then show that the garments i have made will be from different places and hopefully mean more to the customer and encourage them to keep these garments longer and make some sort of emotional connection.

When we got there at around 12:15pm unfortunately the tyed was in so it was possible to go onto the beach, i looked around for a shop that would sell wools and yarns however i found that particularly hard and didnt manage to find one which i was quite dissapointed about. However when the tyed finally went out at around 4:45pm i managed to take some photos of the bit of RUBBISH that was on the beach although there wasnt much that had been washed up!

I think im going to have to go to a coast somwhere to see a derilict beach near a cliff, i think thats where ill find what i am looking for. Although i did manage to find an old type of net with scraps of RUBBISH tangled in it this was what i found most interesting.

Onto the next beach..

What a load of old RUBBISH!

Hmm, i have completely changed my theme for this project.
Firstly i was going to use rocket fuels and how bad for the environment that is. I chose this as i wanted to choose a theme that was bad for the environment and be able to change that around and hopefully show it from a different perspective. I have kept that idea, but changed my focus to RUBBISH. I think this is a lot more experimental and i can explore this idea further, it seems more broad for my research.

I have created my sketchbook around this idea, after putting pages of inspirational designers in.
Not only have i got a lot of inspiration from this idea, but also found that my colour palette came from this.

Finding images.
I looked up images such as rubbish on beaches, washed up from the sea. This in my opinion gives a kind of story to the concept, a sort of history to the RUBBISH. To think that it could of been in the sea for 1, 2, 3 or 500 days! who knows? how the shape, texture and colour has changed. It may well be that after being washed up the RUBBISH has slightly disintergrated, rotted or rusted. This is how i found my colour palette from these concepts. I thought of using quite neutral colours such as sand, nude, pale rustic colours, pale blues and pale greens.

Knit.
I have chosen to do knit for my outcomes and development. I think this ties in well with my theme. I am going to create knit with faults in it and holes, to show how it has gone wrong. This makes me think of how when something goes wrong, you may not want it any more or you may not want to wear it if it is ripped or with holes it is what we would then call as RUBBISH and quite possibly throw it out in the RUBBISH. Whereas i am finding a way to change that way of thinking, i want to make things that are torn and apparently worthless into something that people will cherish and want to keep. In order for me to do this i will add meaning to the garments by using RUBBISH that i have collected from somewhere that is important to me.

Upcycling.
I am also going to upcycle old garments, this is my way of incorporating the "Make do and mend" idea that i have looked at and added into my sketchbook as this is a practical way of being friendly to the environment. I am hoping to get some denim jeans to do this with. Denim is a material that is always in fashion, it will probably never go out of fashion, i mean everybody has a pair of jeans in there wardrobe. They are like an essential piece of clothing to have.

Please comment if you have any further suggestions or ideas that could help me with this, or any comments you wish to add,

Thank you.

Noki and sustainability

Noki, is a company that design clothes using old clothes and other resources. I found looking at there work very interesting and was very inspired by the way they put things together and create a modern look on upcycling. I am going to put a few images of their work as my main inspirational designer. One image that particularly caught my attention was the way they had made a dress into a new garment however, using the full dress as the bottom of the garment. ORIGINAL.
